Following the result of the EU referendum, press coverage made much of the level of work that will be needed by the UK to extricate itself from the EU. But this is not the first time a state has left a larger union or federation of states and whilst past history does not necessarily guarantee future performance, clues can be taken from other occasions where one state has separated from a wider union.
